Delhi Police Arrest 11 in Crackdown After Turkman Gate Demolition Clashes
Delhi Police have arrested eleven individuals, including a juvenile, following violent clashes that erupted during an MCD anti-encroachment drive near the historic Turkman Gate area in central Delhi. The operation, conducted on January 7, 2026, was based on a Delhi High Court order to remove illegal constructions, but it descended into stone-pelting and injuries to police personnel.
The Incident: Demolition Drive Sparks Unrest
Acting on the court’s directive, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) moved with bulldozers and personnel around midnight to clear alleged illegal structures near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque. Approximately 30 minutes into the operation, a crowd of 30-35 people gathered and began pelting stones at police and MCD workers, leading to violent clashes.
At least five police officers were injured, including the Station House Officer of Chandni Mahal police station. Police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. Authorities have clarified that the demolition was strictly limited to unauthorized commercial structures and that the mosque itself was not touched.
Arrests and Expanding Investigation
In the immediate aftermath, police registered an FIR under charges including rioting and obstruction. Five individuals—Mohammad Arib, Mohammad Kashif, Mohammad Adnan, Mohammad Kaif, and Sameer—were arrested and remanded to 13 days of judicial custody.
The investigation has since expanded. Using CCTV and drone footage, police identified and detained six more suspects—Afaan, Adil, Shahnawaz, Hamza, Atharr, and Ubed—bringing the total arrests to eleven. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan confirmed the detentions and noted the deployment of enhanced security, including paramilitary forces, to prevent further unrest.

Authorities attribute the rapid escalation to false information spread on social media, including rumors that the mosque was being demolished. Police are monitoring online platforms to identify accounts that may have incited violence.
Ahead of Friday prayers, heavy security has been deployed around the mosque and surrounding areas to maintain calm. Police have appealed for public cooperation and urged reliance on official information channels.
