Ambulance Fire in Gujarat’s Aravalli Kills 4, Including Newborn and Doctor

In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through Gujarat, a moving ambulance caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a one-day-old baby and a young doctor. The tragedy occurred near Modasa in the Aravalli district, snuffing out lives during a critical medical transfer and raising serious concerns about ambulance safety standards in India.

The Tragic Timeline of the Incident

The ambulance was transporting a critically ill newborn from a hospital in Modasa to a specialized private hospital in Ahmedabad for advanced care. Around 1 a.m. on the Modasa-Dhansura Road, the vehicle was suddenly engulfed in flames.

According to Gujarat Police Inspector DB Vala, the four victims have been identified as:

  • The one-day-old infant

  • The baby’s father, Jignesh Mochi (38)

  • Dr. Shantilal Rentiya (30)

  • Nurse Bhuriben Manat (23)

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports suggest the fire spread with terrifying speed, trapping those in the passenger compartment and giving them little to no chance to escape.

Survivors and Emergency Response

Three other individuals in the ambulance sustained serious burn injuries. They included two relatives accompanying the baby’s father and the ambulance driver. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Local fire brigades responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze. However, their efforts were too late to save the four victims, who had already succumbed to the fire by the time help arrived.

Investigation and Unanswered Questions

The exact cause of the ambulance fire remains unknown and is now the subject of a thorough investigation. Authorities have not confirmed a definitive reason for the sudden blaze. Forensic science teams have been called to the scene to collect evidence and piece together the sequence of events that led to the catastrophe.

Law enforcement officials have promised a comprehensive inquiry, which will include examining any available CCTV footage from along the route and a detailed technical inspection of the ambulance’s remains.

A Community in Mourning and a Call for Safety Reforms

The incident has plunged the local community into mourning and sparked a national conversation about the safety protocols governing emergency medical services. The father, Jignesh Mochi, was a resident of the neighboring Mahisagar district, and the family was in the midst of a desperate attempt to save the newborn’s life.

This tragic episode underscores the grave risks associated with medical transport and highlights critical gaps in safety. It has led to urgent calls from citizens and experts alike for a mandatory review of ambulance design and fire safety systems. Key demands include:

  • Enhanced Fire Prevention: The installation of automatic fire suppression systems in all ambulances.

  • Improved Emergency Egress: Better and more accessible emergency exits for patients and medical staff in the rear cabin.

  • Strict Compliance Checks: Regular, mandatory safety audits for all emergency medical service vehicles to ensure they meet the highest operational standards.

The loss of a doctor, a nurse, a father, and a newborn—all in a vehicle meant to provide lifesaving care—is a profound tragedy. It serves as a stark reminder that the vehicles dedicated to saving lives must themselves be beyond reproach in terms of safety and reliability. As the investigation continues, the hope is that this disaster will catalyze meaningful reforms to prevent such a heartbreaking loss from ever happening again.
