Infant Dies at Uri Hospital; Family Alleges Medical Negligence, Inquiry Ordered

A one-month-old infant has died at the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Uri, Baramulla, sparking allegations of medical negligence from the grieving family and prompting an official inquiry by health authorities.

The Incident and Allegations

The baby, identified as Asgar Ali, son of Mehboob Mughal from Bandi village, was brought to the hospital early Sunday in serious condition. Family members allege that doctors did not conduct a proper examination and advised them to seek care at a private facility instead, a delay they claim proved fatal. Distressing footage of the infant’s mother accusing hospital staff circulated on social media, amplifying public outrage.

Hospital’s Response

Hospital officials have denied negligence. Dr. Balwinder Singh, the Block Medical Officer (BMO) of Uri, stated that the infant was examined and treated as per protocol. He explained that due to the baby’s critical condition, doctors issued an urgent referral to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Baramulla for advanced care. According to Dr. Singh, the family chose to consult a private pediatrician instead of following the referral, which may have impacted timely treatment.

Official Inquiry Initiated

In response to the allegations, the health department has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances of the death. The committee will review medical records, interview staff and family, and assess whether proper procedures were followed. The findings aim to determine any lapses and recommend corrective measures to prevent similar incidents.

Broader Concerns Over Rural Healthcare

This tragedy has highlighted ongoing concerns about healthcare infrastructure in rural areas, especially during weekends when staffing is often reduced. Cases of alleged negligence and delayed treatment continue to raise questions about emergency preparedness, referral systems, and accountability in government hospitals across India.

Awaiting Accountability

As the inquiry proceeds, both the hospital and the family await its conclusions. The outcome may lead to policy changes, disciplinary action, or improved protocols at the facility. For now, the death of Asgar Ali underscores the critical need for responsive, reliable healthcare in remote regions and has left a community in mourning while seeking answers and accountability.
