Elderly Woman Dies in Kanpur After CPR at Nursing Home Breaks Her Ribs; Family Alleges Medical Negligence
A tragic incident at a private nursing home in Kanpur has raised serious questions about medical negligence and patient safety. An elderly woman, identified as Sudha Dube (60), died after staff at a nursing home in the Kailash Vihar area of Kalyanpur administered Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) that allegedly broke multiple ribs, leading to her rapid decline.
The incident began on Monday night when Sudha Dube, a resident of Kannauj, was admitted to the private nursing home after her health deteriorated. According to her family, the facility demanded an advance payment of ₹21,000 and had them sign paperwork before commencing any substantial treatment.
The situation took a critical turn on Tuesday morning when the patient experienced severe breathing difficulties. In a desperate attempt to save her, the nursing home staff performed CPR. However, the procedure went terribly wrong.
Family’s Account: “They Climbed Onto Her Chest”
The victim’s children, daughter Pooja Dube and son Surjeet Dube, allege gross malpractice. They claim that the staff administered CPR with excessive and improper force.
“My mother’s ribs were broken when they climbed onto her chest to give CPR,” her daughter stated, asserting that the brutal manner of the procedure directly caused the fractures and accelerated her mother’s death.
Following the failed resuscitation, the patient was urgently referred to a cardiology institute in Kanpur. She arrived around 2:00 PM but was declared dead on arrival. A subsequent medical examination reportedly confirmed the presence of broken ribs and other complications.
Broader Concerns: Training and Oversight in Private Healthcare
This tragedy has ignited a debate about the competence and training of staff at smaller private nursing homes, especially when performing high-stakes emergency procedures like CPR. While rib fractures can be a known, albeit uncommon, risk of properly performed CPR on fragile or elderly patients, the family’s description of the method points to potential improper technique and excessive force.
The case underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and oversight in private healthcare facilities to ensure they adhere to standard medical protocols and employ adequately trained personnel.

Grieving and seeking accountability, the Dube family has taken the body back to their native Kannauj. They have expressed their intention to lodge formal complaints with the Uttar Pradesh health department and local administration, demanding a thorough investigation into the nursing home’s practices and accountability for the alleged medical negligence.
