Serious Deception: UP Man Arrested for Posing as Cop to Impress Prospective In-Laws

UP Man Poses as Fake Police Inspector to Impress Bride’s Family, Arrested in Saharanpur

In a shocking incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, police have arrested a young man who posed as a fake police sub-inspector in an attempt to secure a marriage alliance. The accused, identified as Mohammad Kasim, allegedly used a police uniform and false claims of employment to deceive a girl’s family.

According to police officials, the case came to light during routine checking in the Sadar Bazaar area, where officers noticed a suspicious young man dressed in a police uniform. His behaviour raised doubts, prompting the police to question him. Upon verification, it was discovered that he was not a serving officer but had been impersonating one.

Investigations revealed that Kasim, a resident of Bareilly district, had fabricated his identity to improve his chances of marriage. The girl he was interested in belonged to a family that preferred a groom working in the police department. Taking advantage of this expectation, the accused purchased a police uniform and began presenting himself as a newly recruited sub-inspector.

To make his story convincing, he claimed that he had recently been selected into the police force and was posted in Saharanpur. His confident behaviour and appearance in uniform reportedly convinced the girl’s family, who initially trusted his claims without suspicion. The uniform appeared authentic at first glance, making the deception difficult to detect.

As discussions between the two families progressed, plans were made for a formal meeting. The accused invited the girl’s family to Saharanpur, telling them that he was currently posted there. The meeting took place near the court area, where both families gathered to take the relationship forward. The accused believed his plan was proceeding smoothly.

However, things took an unexpected turn during this meeting. A real police officer present at the location noticed something unusual about Kasim’s uniform and overall appearance. The officer found discrepancies in the way the uniform was worn, including issues with the insignia and stars, which did not match official standards. These subtle differences are often missed by civilians but are immediately apparent to trained officers.

The suspicion deepened when the girl’s family approached the officer and casually asked about Kasim’s posting and duty details. This interaction confirmed the officer’s doubts, leading to immediate questioning of the young man. The family had not previously suspected anything amiss.

During interrogation, Kasim failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding his batch, posting, and official credentials. His inconsistent replies further exposed the truth. Police then took him into custody and brought him to the Sadar Bazaar police station for further questioning. He could not produce any valid identification or appointment letter.

Under sustained interrogation, the accused eventually confessed that he was not part of the police force. He admitted that he had adopted the fake identity solely to impress the girl’s family and secure a better marriage proposal. Police also recovered a fake identity card and the uniform used in the deception. The uniform and badge were seized as evidence.

Authorities have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections related to impersonation and fraud. Further investigation is underway to determine whether he had attempted similar acts in the past or deceived other families using the same method. Police are also verifying if any other individuals were involved in helping him procure the uniform or fake documents.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing trend of individuals using fake identities to manipulate marriage prospects. In recent times, several such cases have surfaced where individuals posed as government officials, doctors, or engineers to gain trust and financial or social benefits. Such frauds can cause significant emotional and financial distress to affected families.

Police officials have urged the public to remain vigilant while finalising marriage alliances. Families are advised to thoroughly verify the background, employment, and credentials of prospective grooms to avoid falling victim to such frauds. Simple steps like requesting official identification, verifying through official channels, and conducting background checks can help prevent deception.

This case serves as a reminder that appearances can be deceptive, and due diligence is essential—especially in matters as important as marriage. The accused remains in police custody as investigations continue, and authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of impersonation or fraud.
