Trump Pushes Europe for Full Tariffs on China, India

Trump Pushes Europe for 100% Tariffs on China and India to Ratchet Up Pressure on Russia

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly called on the European Union to put massive 100% tariffs on imports from India and China, an unprecedented step that could change global trade relationships. The goal, as stated, is to increase economic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin by punishing critical countries that continue to buy Russian oil despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The high-stakes offer was made during a conference call with Trump, EU sanctions ambassador David O’Sullivan, and other top Brussels officials. According to reports, Trump assured the EU that if they decided to join this strong economic front, the US would react with equal levies. An EU ambassador described the US position as an ultimatum: “We’re ready to go…”but only if our European partners step up with us.”

This policy offers a possible seismic change from the EU’s established playbook, which has traditionally relied on targeted sanctions on Russian firms rather than broad, punitive taxes on third-party countries.

China Condemns Proposal as India Engages in Talks

Beijing’s reaction was fast and critical. China’s foreign ministry denied the idea, accusing the United States of applying “economic pressure” and opposing being used as a “pawn” in geopolitical tactics involving Russia.

However, the situation in India looks to be more complicated. While the United States increased duties on select Indian imports by 25% this summer in reaction to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian petroleum, Trump maintained a friendly tone. In a social media post, he noted that the United States and India are “continuing negotiations to address trade barriers between our two nations.” He expressed a desire to speak with his “very good friend,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and hoped for a satisfactory conclusion.

PM Modi replied on platform X, describing India and the United States as “close friends and natural partners.” He looked forward to their encounter, stressing that negotiations might unlock “limitless potential” in bilateral collaboration, suggesting a possible US-India trade reset following a period of delayed talks and tensions.

Strategic Implications and Diplomatic Risks

The demand for 100% tariffs on India and China is a high-risk strategy by Western nations to destroy Russia’s oil revenues. It reflects Trump’s frustration with delayed peace negotiations and Russia’s growing military activities.

However, the diplomatic and economic risks are substantial:

  • For the EU, imposing high tariffs on two of its key trade partners would need a significant rethinking of its strategy, which has always balanced values-driven penalties with economic caution. The potential for political and economic implications is considerable.
  • A Delicate Balancing Act: Trump’s twin approach—advocating tough tariffs and pursuing warmer Modi-Trump conversations reveal a policy of exerting maximum pressure on Russia but retaining flexibility for critical strategic ties abroad.

The world is awaiting to see if the EU will join this harsh US position and how nations like China and India will react, laying the groundwork for a potential new chapter in global economic statecraft.
