At Least 11 Dead in Massive Kolkata Warehouse Fire, Dozens Missing
A catastrophic fire has claimed at least 11 lives with dozens more missing after it devastated a warehouse complex in Nazirabad, Anandapur, on the southern outskirts of Kolkata. The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Monday, has left families in anguish as search and rescue efforts continue amidst the smoldering wreckage.
Details of the Tragedy and Rescue Efforts
The inferno broke out around 3 a.m. in twin storage facilities—one a decorator’s unit and the other supplying a popular momos chain. Many of the victims were migrant laborers from districts like Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas who were sleeping inside the premises when the fire started. Highly flammable materials, including thermocol and dry food stocks, caused the fire to spread rapidly and burn intensely.
Firefighters battled the blaze for over 48 hours, struggling with narrow access routes and a lack of on-site fire safety equipment. While the main flames are now under control, teams are carefully clearing unstable debris to search for more victims. Police sources indicate DNA testing may be needed to identify some of the severely burned remains recovered.
Families’ Anguish and Safety Lapses
Relatives gathered at the site, sharing harrowing accounts. Nayan Haldar recounted the last call from his father, Basudeb, who said he was trapped inside. The family later found only his charred bicycle.
Preliminary investigations by the West Bengal Fire Services have revealed serious lapses. At least one building reportedly lacked mandatory fire safety clearance, and basic equipment like fire extinguishers and clear emergency exits were absent. There are also allegations that the main gate was locked at night, hindering escape.
Official Response and Investigation
State Minister Sujit Bose has acknowledged the safety failures, and a full inquiry has been ordered. Authorities have pledged to register a case and take legal action against the warehouse owners if violations are confirmed.
The state government has announced compensation for the victims’ families, covering funeral expenses and providing relief. Community volunteers are offering food, water, and counseling to the grieving relatives camped at the site.

Ongoing Risks and Call for Stricter Safety
The tragedy has exposed critical gaps in fire safety compliance for industrial and storage facilities in the city, especially those housing overnight workers and flammable materials. As rescue teams work cautiously amid unstable structures, the incident underscores an urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety norms to prevent such disasters in the future.
