Abandoned Infant Rescued from Freezing Cold at Ranchi Railway Station
In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the community, a three-month-old infant was found abandoned in the bitter cold on Platform No. 1 of Ranchi Railway Station on Sunday afternoon. The baby, left vulnerable to near-freezing temperatures, was rescued by alert railway police and is now under the protective care of authorities as a search for the parents begins.
Discovery and Swift Rescue by Railway Police
The tragedy unfolded when Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Arun Kumar and woman constable Rakhi Kumari, on patrol duty, heard the faint cries of a child near the station’s overbridge. They discovered the shivering infant, wrapped only in cloth, alone on the platform. Acting immediately, they secured the baby and alerted the Government Railway Police (GRP) Ranchi.
The infant was transported to the police station for warmth and initial care, highlighting the grave danger posed by Jharkhand’s severe winter chill to an unprotected newborn.
Investigation Launched, CCTV Provides Key Clue
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation, with CCTV footage from the station becoming a critical piece of evidence. The footage reportedly shows an unidentified man carrying the baby into the platform area before leaving the scene. Police are analyzing this video to identify the individual and understand the circumstances that led to this abandonment.
Appeals have been made to the public, urging anyone with information about the man in the footage or the child’s family to come forward. Initial inquiries with passengers and vendors yielded no leads, deepening the mystery.
Child Handed Over to Welfare Authorities
Following mandatory legal procedures by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP, the infant was formally placed in the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Ranchi. A CWC representative stated, “This is a very sensitive case. The priority right now is the child’s health and safety.”
The committee is now responsible for the baby’s shelter, medical care, and overall well-being. Officials confirm the child is stable and receiving necessary attention while social workers begin assessments.
Community Reaction and Broader Concerns
The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage on social media and within the local community. It has reignited urgent conversations about child safety in public spaces, especially high-traffic transit hubs, and the need for stronger support systems for families in crisis.
Advocates are calling for increased community vigilance and better mechanisms to prevent such desperate acts, emphasizing the vulnerability of children during winter.

Ongoing Search and Public Appeal
The search for the infant’s parents or guardians remains active. Police are meticulously reviewing all evidence and have reinforced their public appeal for information. Even minor details could provide essential leads in reuniting the child with its family or holding those responsible accountable.
As the investigation continues, the primary focus remains on ensuring the rescued infant receives the love, care, and protection it desperately needs, safe from the harsh elements and the trauma of abandonment.
