BRICS Summit 2026 in Delhi: PM Modi, New Delhi Declaration and Key Outcomes

The BRICS Summit 2026 concluded in New Delhi after two days of high-level discussions on global security, trade, economic cooperation, technology and conflicts affecting the world economy.

India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam as the group’s chair for 2026. The expanded bloc brought together 11 member countries, including India, China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Iran and the UAE.

PM Modi Calls for Practical BRICS Action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS should focus on producing concrete results instead of remaining only a platform for discussion.

During the summit, Modi highlighted the impact of geopolitical tensions, disrupted supply chains and emerging risks linked to technology and critical minerals. He called for greater cooperation among member countries to address these challenges.

India also pushed issues linked to health, food security, energy, artificial intelligence, climate action and digital cooperation.

The summit produced the New Delhi Declaration, which outlined the bloc’s shared positions on several international and economic issues.

Key Outcomes of the BRICS Summit 2026

Some of the major areas highlighted during the summit included:

  • Global security: BRICS leaders discussed conflicts in West Asia and other regions and called for restraint and diplomatic solutions.
  • Terrorism: The New Delhi Declaration strongly addressed terrorism and referred to the Pahalgam attack.
  • Trade: Leaders opposed protectionist measures and stressed the need for a fairer global trading system.
  • Local currencies: BRICS countries backed stronger cross-border payments and greater use of national currencies in trade.
  • Artificial intelligence: AI cooperation and responsible technology development emerged as important priorities.
  • Energy: Members discussed energy security and cooperation during a period of major geopolitical uncertainty.
  • Health: India announced an early warning system for infectious diseases.
  • Global governance: BRICS reiterated calls for reforms in international institutions, including greater representation for developing countries.

Modi Holds Key Bilateral Meetings

The summit also gave India an opportunity to strengthen ties with major BRICS members and partner countries.

Modi held meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He also met leaders from several partner countries.

His discussions with other leaders covered trade, energy, defence, technology, regional security and broader economic cooperation.

A meeting between Modi and UN Secretary-General António Guterres also focused on conflicts, food security, renewable energy, human-centric AI and reforms to multilateral institutions.

What the Delhi Summit Means for India

The New Delhi summit gave India an opportunity to shape the agenda of an increasingly influential group of emerging economies.

For New Delhi, the focus was not only on geopolitical issues but also on areas that could directly affect economic growth, trade, technology and energy security.

India has now passed the BRICS chairship to China for the next term. Modi said the bloc should continue moving towards practical cooperation and solutions to global challenges.

The 2026 summit therefore marked an important moment for India’s role in the Global South and its efforts to push for a more representative and multipolar international system.
