Delhi Building Collapse in Satya Niketan: 5 Dead as Rescue Operation Continues
A five-storey building used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, September 6, killing at least five people and triggering a major rescue operation.
The building, located in southwest Delhi near Delhi University’s South Campus, was reportedly being used to house students. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, MCD and other agencies rushed to the site after the structure collapsed at around 1:30 pm.
At least 10 people had been rescued by late Sunday, while reports said rescue personnel were continuing to search the rubble for anyone who could still be trapped.
What happened in Satya Niketan?
The building was reportedly around 40 to 50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. Police said it was being used as a PG accommodation.
Preliminary information indicates that repair or renovation work was underway in the building, including work around the basement and ground-floor area. Authorities are investigating whether the construction activity contributed to the collapse. The exact cause has not yet been conclusively established.
Residents also raised concerns about water accumulation and the condition of the building, adding to questions about its structural safety.

FIR registered against owner
Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the alleged owner, identified as Hariram, and others in connection with the collapse.
According to police, the case was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are examining whether renovation work carried out at the property played a role in the structural failure. Multiple teams have reportedly been formed to trace the people named in the case.
Delhi government orders inquiry
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and reviewed the rescue operation. Following a preliminary assessment, the Delhi government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The government has said that those found responsible will face action under the law. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Rescue operation continues
Emergency teams continued working through the rubble as authorities assessed the building and surrounding structures. An adjacent building was also evacuated as a precaution after concerns were raised about safety in the area.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of old buildings and student PG accommodations in densely populated parts of Delhi, particularly where construction or renovation work is carried out without adequate structural safeguards.
Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation and rescue efforts progress.
