IndiGo Flight Diverted to Hyderabad After Power Bank Fire Mid-Air

An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on October 11, 2026, after a passenger’s power bank reportedly caught fire inside the aircraft. The incident triggered a safety response onboard, but the plane landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. No injuries were reported.

The flight, numbered 6E 6115, was operated using an Airbus A321 aircraft. It departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at around 1:30 pm and was scheduled to reach Chennai at 4 pm. However, smoke detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device prompted the pilots to divert the aircraft.

According to IndiGo, the cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control. The pilots then followed established safety protocols and landed safely in Hyderabad.

What Happened on the IndiGo Flight?

Videos shared online showed flames inside an overhead luggage compartment, with passengers attempting to smother the fire using bags and other available items. The cabin crew intervened and used onboard safety equipment to control the situation.

While media reports identified the device as a power bank, IndiGo’s official statement referred to smoke from a passenger’s personal electronic device without specifying the exact device or confirming the cause of the fire.

Following the safe landing, the airline arranged an alternative aircraft to transport passengers to Chennai. IndiGo also said it was offering refreshments and providing updates to minimise inconvenience caused by the diversion.

The incident highlights the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat and catch fire if damaged or affected by an internal fault. Smoke or flames from electronic devices inside an aircraft cabin require immediate attention because they can threaten passenger safety.

Power Bank Safety Rules for Air Travellers

Power banks are subject to specific airline and aviation safety restrictions because their batteries can pose a fire risk. Passengers should follow these precautions when travelling:

  • Carry power banks in cabin baggage: Do not pack them in checked-in luggage.
  • Keep devices accessible: Avoid storing power banks in overhead compartments when airline rules require them to remain within reach.
  • Do not use damaged batteries: Stop using any power bank that appears swollen, unusually hot or damaged.
  • Alert the cabin crew: Immediately report smoke, unusual heat or a burning smell from an electronic device.

The October 11 incident adds to previous reports of battery-related safety incidents involving aircraft. The safe landing and the crew’s response helped prevent injuries, while the diversion allowed the airline to manage the situation under established safety procedures.

Further information about the exact cause of the fire and any subsequent investigation had not been confirmed in the reports available at the time of writing.
