Manipur Violence: Nine Killed as Clashes Spread Across Three Districts
Fresh violence in Manipur has claimed at least nine lives and left around 14 houses burned across three hill districts. The clashes between armed groups linked to the Kuki and Naga communities took place on October 9 and 10, 2026, raising fresh concerns about security in the northeastern state.
The incidents were reported in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts. Gunfire, ambushes and arson occurred at several locations within a 24-hour period, according to media reports.

What Triggered the Fresh Violence in Manipur?
The violence began on Friday night, October 9, near Chassad village in Kamjong district. A 42-year-old Kuki woman, Domkhonei Touthang, died after being shot during an exchange of fire involving security personnel and unidentified armed men.
Security forces had launched an operation to dismantle alleged illegal bunkers near Chassad police station. The situation escalated, with further shootings and fires reported in nearby areas.
Two Naga village guards were killed in a separate attack in Kamjong district. Additional killings occurred in Kangpokpi, where village volunteers came under attack. In Ukhrul district, a man identified as Sandeep Rai died after unidentified assailants ambushed his vehicle.
Authorities have not confirmed the identities of all those responsible for the attacks. Investigations into the separate incidents are continuing.
Authorities Step Up Security Measures
The district administration imposed restrictions on gatherings near Chassad police station to prevent further violence. Security forces also increased their presence in affected areas.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and directed officials to take immediate steps to restore peace and protect residents.
The chief minister also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the situation. Modi assured the state government of support in its efforts to restore peace and stability.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity announced a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district from Saturday evening in response to the attacks.
The latest violence highlights continuing tensions in Manipur’s hill districts. Authorities now face the challenge of preventing further attacks, protecting civilians and restoring normal life in affected communities.
