The Prime Minister said the projects would make daily travel easier, strengthen industrial activity and create employment opportunities for young people. The programme included completed infrastructure as well as projects receiving foundation stones for future development.
Chennai Metro Phase II Opens New Route
A major highlight of the visit was the opening of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II. The corridor was built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore and features a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure.
The newly opened stretch connects Chennai’s western suburbs and is expected to improve access to residential and commercial areas. Its advanced signalling systems also support driverless train operations. Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay travelled on the metro following the inauguration.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also inaugurated and launched national highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore. These include improvements to the Madurai Ring Road, the Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the proposed Thiruvarur Bypass on NH-83.
Railway, Port and Research Projects Included
The development package extends beyond urban transport and road infrastructure. Key projects include:
- Railways: Infrastructure works worth more than ₹750 crore, including the Karaikal–Peralam railway line, three rail flyovers and five redeveloped Amrit stations.
- Ports: Modernisation and capacity improvements at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port.
- Petroleum: A ₹1,620-crore lube oil base stocks project at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation refinery in Manali.
- Scientific research: The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras, dedicated to the nation to support advanced brain research.
The brain centre will support research into three-dimensional maps of human brains at cellular resolution. The programme also included the launch of C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas designed to support research into stroke-related conditions.
The projects mark a major infrastructure push for Tamil Nadu, spanning public transport, freight movement, industrial capacity and scientific research. Their longer-term impact will depend on implementation, project completion and how effectively the new facilities serve residents and businesses.
