Modi Welcomes UK PM Keir Starmer in Mumbai to Strengthen India-UK Strategic Partnership

Modi Hosts UK PM Keir Starmer in Mumbai to Deepen India-UK Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai today, with a high-stakes meeting at Raj Bhavan aimed at significantly deepening the India-UK strategic partnership. This high-level dialogue, following Starmer’s arrival on October 8th, is set to cover a broad agenda spanning trade, defense, technology, climate change, and education.

This summit marks the third meeting between the two leaders since Starmer took office in July 2024, following their previous interactions at Chequers and the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Key Delegations and Agenda: Strengthening Economic and Security Ties

Prime Minister Modi is being supported by a high-powered Indian delegation, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. PM Starmer is accompanied by key figures from his government, notably UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and Minister of State for Investment Jason Stockwood.

The leaders are expected to drive cooperation across multiple fronts, with a sharp focus on:

  • Trade & Investment: Advancing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

  • Defense & Security: Strengthening strategic and defense partnerships.

  • Technology: Overseeing a technology security initiative launched in July.

  • Climate & Health: Collaborating on clean energy and global health initiatives.

In a significant economic announcement, it was revealed that 64 Indian firms will invest £1.3 billion in the UK, a move that underscores growing economic interdependence.

Global Fintech Fest and CEO Forum Take Center Stage

A major highlight of the day is the 6th Global Fintech Fest (GFF) in Mumbai, where both Prime Ministers are slated to deliver addresses. The event’s theme, “Empowering Finance for a Better World – Powered by AI, Augmented Intelligence, Innovation, and Inclusion,” aligns with the broader goals of the bilateral talks.

Furthering the economic dialogue, the India-UK CEO Forum will be convened, bringing together top corporate leaders and policymakers from both nations to identify new opportunities and address challenges in the business landscape.

Building on a Foundation of Recent Engagements

Starmer’s visit has already seen substantial progress. Prior to the main summit, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle met to begin implementing the trade deal. They signed a revised Terms of Reference for the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), a mechanism designed to strengthen oversight and execution of economic agreements.

In a move bridging diplomacy and soft power, Starmer visited Yash Raj Films Studio and announced that three major Bollywood productions will be filmed in the UK starting in 2026—a project expected to generate over 3,000 jobs and bolster cultural ties.

A Strategic Partnership Poised for the Future

The Mumbai summit is strategically framed around advancing the “Vision 2035” roadmap, a comprehensive ten-year framework for India-UK collaboration. Prime Minister Modi’s social media post welcoming Starmer reflected optimism for shared progress and a forward-looking partnership.

For Prime Minister Starmer, this visit is a crucial opportunity to capitalize on the trade deal finalized in July and demonstrate his government’s commitment to global partnerships. For India, it is a pivotal moment to expand investment links and solidify strategic cooperation with a key global ally. Through this multifaceted engagement encompassing diplomacy, trade, technology, and culture, both nations are signaling a strong, committed effort to elevate their relationship to a new level.
