Dehradun Student Death: Police Say No Evidence Attack on Angel Chakma Was Racist
The death of 24-year-old MBA student Angel Chakma in Dehradun has ignited a national debate after police stated there is no conclusive evidence that the fatal attack was racially motivated. The incident, which began with an altercation on December 9 and led to Chakma’s death on December 26, has drawn widespread outrage and calls for justice.
The Incident: Conflicting Narratives
According to police, Angel Chakma and his brother Michael were in Dehradun’s Selaqui area on December 9 when an argument broke out with a group of men near a liquor shop. The confrontation turned violent, and the brothers were attacked with knives and blunt weapons.
Angel sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen and severe head injuries. After 17 days in the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on December 26. Michael was also injured in the assault.
The Chakma family and student groups allege the attack was preceded by racial slurs, with the brothers being called “Chinese” and “momo.” They claim Angel responded, “We are Indians, not Chinese,” before the violence erupted.
Police Investigation: Challenging the Racial Motive
In a significant statement, Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said investigators found no firm evidence of racial motivation. Police suggest the remarks were made “in jest” among the group and that a misunderstanding led to the altercation. They also note one arrested suspect is from Manipur, which they argue complicates a simple “racial attack” narrative.
An FIR has been registered on Michael’s complaint, and five suspects have been arrested. A sixth accused, reportedly a Nepali national, remains at large, with police offering a reward for information.
Family and Community Outrage
The police stance has sparked strong reactions. Angel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma (a BSF jawan), insists racial insults were central to the attack and has criticized police for initially delaying the FIR.
Student organizations, particularly from Northeast India, have expressed deep anger, viewing the incident as symptomatic of the broader prejudice and discrimination faced by people from the region in other parts of the country. Protests and online campaigns have demanded accountability.
Political Condemnation and Broader Implications
Prominent politicians have condemned the killing. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia called it a “profound blow to humanity,” while Arvind Kejriwal urged stronger laws against racism.
The case has reignited critical conversations about racial and ethnic discrimination in India, highlighting the need for stronger legal protections, educational measures, and societal sensitivity to prevent such tragedies and ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens.
As the investigation continues, the demand for transparency and justice remains paramount for Angel Chakma’s grieving family and a concerned nation.
